Children can be bothered by things they see online, and filters can be a helpful tool in reducing the chances of coming across something upsetting.
There are various key points on your network at which filters can be applied:
Filter at the ISP Level
The 4 big internet providers in the UK – BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media - provide their customers with free parental controls which can be activated at any time. Call your ISP for details.
Filter at the Router Level
Some routers have internet filters already built into them which can be configured to filter websites. They may just require activation or configuration. They are useful because their filters also apply to any other device connected to the WiFi, such as tablets.
Filter at the Device Level
Parental Control software can be installed/configured on computers (some have built-in controls), and also configured on mobile devices too.
Talk About Staying Safe
It is important to talk to your children about staying safe online and make sure they know that they can turn to you if they get into any difficulty.
