Starting a Business? Get IT Right Early

Starting a business is exciting. New name, new logo, new plans…

But before you rush into buying laptops, email accounts, software and websites, it’s worth pausing. A few sensible IT choices at the start can save money, time and headaches later.

Don’t just go with what works today

Think about where the business might be in 1–3 years.

Some things to consider:

  • Domain name

Your domain name is very important as it reflects your brand and is usually linked to your website, email, and more. So it’s important that it’s registered properly and owned by you — not a designer, friend, or former employee.

  • Business email

A proper business email address looks more professional and gives you more control. It’s worth deciding early who will host it and making sure it’s tied to your business domain, not a personal account.

  • Files and cloud storage

Where will your documents live? Can you and your team access them securely from different locations? Are files backed up properly, and can access be removed if someone leaves?

  • Business software

Invoicing, accounts, CRM, job management and marketing tools can quickly become messy if they don’t talk to each other. Choosing systems that work together can save hours of re-entering the same information.

  • Website

A website doesn’t have to be expensive. But it should be easy to navigate, mobile-friendly and a good reflection of your business. And if it’s a website you can update yourself, then this can save a lot of additional expense as your business gets off the ground.

  • Security

Even small businesses need sensible security. MFA, encryption, strong passwords, secure file access and proper backups are much easier to put in place early than after a problem.

  • Staff and future growth

Even if it’s just you for now, think ahead. What happens when someone joins the business? How will they get email, files and software access — and just as importantly, how will that access be removed when they leave?

One common mistake is building a business around personal accounts, and not having control over the key elements that make up your business IT setup.

It works… until it really doesn’t.

You don’t need a corporate IT department from day one. But you do need a setup that is secure, tidy, cost-effective and can grow with your business.
