Scams to look out for:

Calendar Invite Scam

A calendar invite scam is circulating in which a malicious .ics attachment adds fake security warning events to a user’s calendar. These messages create urgency and may include links or phone numbers leading to scam websites or fake support services. Opening the attachment alone does not install malware; the risk only occurs if links are clicked or information is shared. To resolve this, delete the calendar events, remove any unwanted calendar subscriptions, delete the email, and mark it as spam. For reassurance, a full malware or virus scan can be performed to confirm the system is secure.

QR Code Scams

Be cautious when scanning QR codes found in public spaces or sent via messages. These codes can lead to malicious websites or trigger unintended subscriptions without your knowledge.

Romance Scams
Fraudsters build online relationships to exploit victims emotionally and financially, often under the guise of needing funds for emergencies. The BBC reported that there have been nearly 1,000 reported romance fraud cases in Surrey since 2020. See the BBC article here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4gezj2qe44o

Phone Scams
Always be wary of unsolicited calls. Never share personal or financial information unless you’re absolutely certain of the caller’s identity. Ask them to verify details only a legitimate contact would know. If you’re unsure, hang up. Don’t call back using the number they provided. Use a trusted source, such as a bill or the official company website, to find verified contact information.

Email Scams
Never click links or open attachments that ask you to log in using your email password. This is a common phishing tactic designed to steal access to your email account and potentially target your contacts as well.

Facebook Scams
Exercise caution when browsing Facebook Marketplace. Scammers often list high-value items, like garden furniture or electric bikes, at unusually low prices (£65–£95) to lure in buyers. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Also, be suspicious of unexpected messages from people you don’t know, or even from friends you haven’t spoken to in a while. Their account may have been compromised. If a conversation feels off or out of character, trust your instincts. Reach out to them through another method to verify it's really them.
